Recommended Book/ Books Vs. Movies

Ella Enchanted
By: Gail Carson Levine
Ella is cursed. She's been cursed ever since she was a baby, when a ignorant fairy "blessed" her with obedience. Now she has to do whatever somebody tells her to do. Everything is fine enough until her mother dies. Ella's father soon marries a cruel lady with daughters just as sweet. The three girls are sent to a  boarding school to become proper ladies. Sick of the strict teachers, Ella runs away. But Ella's way back home is rocky, full of ogres and other magical creatures. But soon after reaching home, Ella realizes that her curse might hurt others besides herself. Through this realization, Ella starts her quest to find the fairy who cursed her, and hopefully be able to save the ones closest to her.

The largest differences in the movie are Ella's companion Slatin, who is not mentioned in that regard in the book, and Prince Charmond. In the movie, he is a young man who Ella detests when she meets him. In the book, the prince is a young boy when they meet, who are good friends. The movie also incorporates a new main character, Char's uncle, who plays the antagonist.

An Ode To Books

By: Nikki

Thick, thin. long, short
Books are portals to other worlds
Where people fly and animals talk
You cry, you laugh, and smile
They council you, they teach you
They are always hard to put down
The words flow smoothly like honey
Making a heartfelt nove,
a thrilling horror,
or a light relief

Oh, the crisp smell of a new book
And the dull slap of turning a page
And the tap-tap-tap of my finger in anticipation
Waiting to see what happens next

How sad it is to finish a book,
Like losing a best friend
Missing the brave characters,
the clever villians,
and the unbelievable adventure
The book is closed,
But a sequel awaits!

Looking through a bookstore,
Is the greatest joy in the world
Shelves are lined with books,
Stories of every color
With Harry Potter, or Sherlock Holmes,
With Jane Austen or Cornelia Funke
Maybe with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate
Curled up in an armchair or sofa
Ah, the bliss.
Like eating your favorite food,
And playing you favorite games
But better, oh so much better

Why walk through a half scary haunted house,
When you can explore the Pyramids of Giza,
Or soar on a magic carpet?
Only in books can you do that
For you can do everything in books

So read!
Just pick up a book
For there is a book about everything,
And a book for everyone!

I DOEn't Get It 1.5

"Ugh..." My mind was fuzzy. Where were we? I was tied  to a chair. A very soft chair... I shook myself.
Don't fall asleep, I scolded myself. I looked around. All of a sudden, my memories flooded back.
"Where are my siblings?" I demanded to no one in particular. Really, I don't know who I was asking. Who lived in this... house?  It looked like some hollowed out ice block.  There weren't any windows, just a ladder made of ice that lead up to a hole. The room was decorated oddly, like some mad scientist who loved gummy bears did it. It looked like a lab, except there were gummy bears 7 ft. tall by the walls. In a pool by the corner was a human sized otter.
"Dosaphine!" Jake yelled. He was tied to a giant marshmallow, just like me. All of my siblings were tied to marshmallow chairs.
"Where are we?" Dophine asked in a frightened voice. "And who lives here?"
"That would be me." the voice came from the pool. It was the otter.

Challenge!

So school has started! Yay! Well, yay for me. I know some people hate school(weirdos), but I love it. I know, I'm such a geek. I'm starting middle school, and its kind of scary. My writing challenge is that you must write a story that has to do with school. It doesn't have to be about the actual school, but it has to have something to do with school. But I'd be so cool if you did some sort of thing about a haunted school or something. Okay, since I've said that, don't do that. Remember, it has to be a short story. I have some friends (I'm talking about you, Sam!) who can write stories that are super awesome, but take FOREVER to read. So, remember, short story about school.

Challenge!

Come on people! I like, never get any stories. Please write stories fore this next theme.
The theme for your story must be...

Sports

Any sport really. But you must focus your story on a sport. It doesn't have to be fiction, so do a report on a sport if you like. Or a story about a famous basketball player or football star. It doesn't matter. Happy writing!

I DOEn't Get It! P1.4

"Dophine!" Dophern screamed. The place where Dophine was sucked up closed, leaving a nothing of Dophine but a blue bobby pin that fell out of her hair.
"Jake, can you-" before I could finish asking the question, Jake, who was examining where Dophine disappeared, was sucked into the ground as well!
"Help!" he called as he was pulled into a scoop of chocolate chip ice cream.
"We should watch the ice cream in case it tries to suck US up to." Dophern advised. After he said that,a hole started to form under me. We all started hopping around like idiots until the holes stopped coming.
"I think THAT phase is over." I sighed. Doe-Doe hadn't minded any of the holes. He's kin of stupid in that way. I don't remember the last time he was scared. Well there was that one time with the giraffe... But that's a different story. Doe-Doe was nonchalantly snacking on the ground. Honestly, Doe-Dope(as I like to call him) made holes in the ice cream faster then the one that had stopped forming!
Suddenly, Dophern looked behind me.
"Watch out!" he warned. All remember is seeing a big, red figure.

Books vs. Movies

This new segment, by request of a fan, is about comparing books, and their movies.
My first book is Holes, by Lois Sachar.
The book and the movie are very similar, so I can't say I liked the movie better. The differences, besides dialogue, are either minuscule, or I haven't found them. If you've never read Holes, here is a short synopsis.

Holes
Stanley Yelnats is cursed. Or, according to his family, their poor family's bad luck is because of an old curse. His father, an inventor, tries many ideas and often fails. His next big idea is to find a way to recycle shoes. One day Stanley is hit on the head by a pair of sneakers, and run to give them to his dad. But it turns out the shoes were the old shoes of the basketball sensation Clyde Livingston. Stanley is sentenced to a year at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile delinquent camp. At the camp, he makes friends with Zero, an orphan. But Camp Green Lake is not normal. The camp leader makes the kids dig holes all day for who knows what, and barely ever finds anything. Through the mysterious Camp Green Lake, Zero, and a whole lot of onions, Stanley Yelnats finds more then just redemption.

I DOEn't Get It 1.3

We hurtle down into an unknown planet.
"WHERE'S AN EMERGENCY BRAKE WHEN YOU NEED ONE???" screamed Jake. Suddenly the whole ship rammed into something. We all scrambled out of the ship to examine the damage. Right as my foot hit the ground, it dropped 50 degrees. Everyone put on a coat as we analyzed the crash.
"That's odd... It landed on something soft enough that left no permanent damage." Jake muttered. He was right! Right at the place of the crash was a giant white blob. It kind of looked like something you'd see on the explore channel. I tasted it gingerly. It was sweet. It tasted vaguely familiar.
"Marshmellows!" I exclaimed. Our ship had landed on the worlds biggest marshmallow. We all tasted it and agreed.
I looked on the ground. It was so cold because we were standing on ice cream.
"No way..." gaped Dophern. Then we all started pigging out on the ground.
"This is so sweet!" giggled Dophanie. Before anyone could respond, the ground opened up and swallowed Dophanie.

My Vacation P2

Hi! My vacation is going awesomely! On the Fourth of July my grandparents came over and we watched fireworks. My sis and I watched The Spy Next Door, courtesy of BlockBuster. Even though this is a blog about reading, this bookworm still likes to watch movies. It was funny, and a good family movie. I usually like to read the book before I see the movie, even though it usually gives away the end. Though if you've ever read The Princess Bride (It's better than it sounds!), the ending is very different (Inconceivable!). Sorry, had to say it. Anyway, I've also read good books like House on the Gulf, by Margaret Haddix. Right now, I'm watching Iron Chef America. I love cooking, if you didn't know that. I'll do another update later!

Creativity!

Creative ideas are so fun, I just had to do it again. This creativity is about story ideas. Don't worry, I'm not going to steal your story idea and make it into a million dollar book (unless it's REALLY good). Just kidding. Anyway, try to make your ideas as zany as possible, but something that could really support an story. Put it in comments, and then all of us could be inspired, or have a laugh! Here I one of mine.

A story about a girl who finds a magic genie while in Persia (are genies Persian?), but the genie has a catch.

Make your idea formatted like that- have a good idea going, but don't be afraid to have a blank. If you do that, everybody else should try to comment and improve the story.

My Vacation

Wow! It's been a week since I've come to Tucson. It feels much longer. I guess that's a good thing. So far we haven't done much. Mostly, we swim. Last night, my mom's friend came over. She was really sweet and it turns out that she once met Weird Al Yancovic (I have no clue how to spell his name!). For those who don't know who that is, he's really famous. He writes parodies like White and Nerdy (derived from a rather bad song called Riding Dirty)and makes them really funny. Another one is Fat, which is his version of Bad by Michel Jackson (who incidentally, died tomorrow, which incidentally is my half birthday).
Anyway, so now I am waiting to see another friend of my mom's, and her kids. I hope they're nice!

Dear Diary: I DOEn't Get It! V1.2

So there we are, cruising through outer space, and Doe-Doe decides to get hungry.
"What are you eating?" asked Jake to Doe-Doe. There was a gray lump in Doe-Doe's hand. Then Dophine looked at the control panel.
"Is there supposed to be a gash in the panel?" she inquired. It turned out that that gash was supposed to be filled in with the chunk in Doe-Doe's hand!
"Stop eating the control panel!" I screamed.
"But it tastes so good!" whimpered the ever stupid Doe-Doe. Red lights flashed above us, indicating that Doe-Doe's mistake had done more damage than we expected.
 Then the whole ship plummeted.

New Email

Finally, if you have a zany story to write, and don't know where to send it, fear not! I have made an email where you can send them. It's readwritelivenikki@gmail.com
I happily await wonderful stories!

Challenge

It's been a while since I've done this! So for this week you have to include this excerpt in your story. Please make your story at a maximum of 6 paragraphs.
Dialouge does not count for paragraphing.
When you see a _____, it means add what you like.

Excerpt: ______ felt like sobbing. This was supposed to be the best vacation ever! Not the worst!

Tucson, Tuscon

Hey everybody! I'm in Arizona, which is on the other side of the states from Pennsylvainia, where I live. So on the 18th, we took a short 1 and a half hour flight to Chicago. While we waited for our layover to AZ, I ate at this Greek joint called Pegasus. I got a funny thing called a gyro(which is pronounced yer-oh). It is pita bread stuffed with sliced meat, tomatoes, and onions. It is sort of like a Greek taco. It was good. Then, we boarded our plane. It took 4 hours or more. We got to AZ at 9:00PM in PA, but that's only like 6:00 in AZ. We ate at In 'n' Out Burger, got some groceries, then came home(which was scorpion free, I might add!). We went to bed at 11, but that's 1:00am in good ole Philly. Here I am now, just waking up at 7:00 in AZ.

Note: So I don't have to do the annoying task of saying, "1:00am in Philly and 11:00pm in AZ," I'm just going to tell you that Philly is 3:00 hours ahead.

Storytime: Part 1.1 of Dear Diary: I DOEn't Get It!

So every once in a while, I am going to write part of a story. Once a story is done, I'll take suggestions for a new story.  Here is my first story! It was inspired by a story we had to make at school. I did it with my friends Samantha and Ian.

Hi! I'm Dosaphine. I know, it's a weird name. On my planet, Treedozium, we're crazy about the sound doe. Anyway, it's the year 3000, and everything is edible and tastes like steak, fries, or s'mores. We don't know why, it just does. I have 4 siblings. Dophern is 15, and he loves small animals. Doe-Doe is 13,  and dumbest. I'm the next oldest at 12. Then there is 10 year old Dophanie. For some reason, the littlest Jake (Nobody knows why he is named that) is the smartest.
Back to the story. The whole story began with a fishing trip. Well, an astroid trip. I'm explaining. Doe-Doe said he was craving an astroid, and astroids around Treedozium taste like watermelon. It's a nice change from steak, fries, and s'mores, so Dozites (people from Treedozium) fish for astroids.
 Then everything went wrong.

A Good Book

The Red Pyramid
By: Rick Riordan

An unknown relative, Uncle Amos, picks the two up, and takes them from England to New York in 5 minutes. The kids are plunged into the magical world of Egyptian mythology. They are the kin of powerful pharaohs, and can do magic. But when they get attacked when Amos leaves, the two know somebody, or something powerful is after them...

Book of the Week

I guess I should call it something else. In the comments, write a new name for the Book of the Week thing. I don't do it weekly anymore...

The Thief Lord
By: Cornelia Funke
Young Prosper and his little brother Bo's parents died, and their aunt will only take in Bo. The two run away to Venice, the magical place their late mother had told them about. The elusive and mysterious Thief Lord takes them under his wing. But when the thief takes up a offer to steal something of seemingly no value, things take a unexpected turn.

Read this book and you'll want to go to Venice(I know I do)!

A Fun Auction(Sort of)

Well, I guess you could call it an auction. PVCS Country Fair And Auction. I only went to the fair part though. It was a school fundraiser. I don't know what your idea of "fundraiser" is, but this was probably cooler than what you're imagining. There was a helicopter. Yeah, thats right. There was a helicopter dropping free candy on the 1/4 mile track and field. It was AWESOME! It was kinda disappointing, though, that there were only 3 different kinds of candies. Also, I missed the horse rides... Anyway, there were tons of games, and Moon Bounces! I almost dunked the principal of the middle school(I will get
you next year, Mr. Shraug!((I hope I spelled that correct.)))

I really liked it.
In the comments, write about a fun experience(maybe my school friends will talk about the auction?).

The Storm

By Natalie

It was a dark and stormy night. Marie huddled under her covers in fear. She heard something out the window. Something dark and scary. It was rustling against the house. Marie heard creaking and she noticed that her window was being opened from the outside. She didn't know what to do, so she just cringed under the covers. She heard footsteps after the window was fully opened. Leaves and rain blasted into Marie's room. Everything was flying everywhere. The covers of Marie's bed flew off. Marie tried to get a good grip on the headboard of her bed because the wind was so strong that she was being blown around. Though the covers were off and she was exposed, she still shut her eyes. Marie didn't want to see what was causing all this. Suddenly, the wind stopped. So did the rain. Nothing left but. Silence. Marie was aware that everything stopped, but she still held onto the headboard. After five minutes of no rain and wind, Marie finally got the courage to open her eyes. Her room looked bare. All was gone. "Was the wind really that powerful?" Marie asked herself. "But, what happened to the footsteps? Who is in our house? Where?" All of a sudden, Marie heard a terrified scream from her parents' room. Marie instinctively jumped out of her bed, forgetting her fear. When she got to her parents' room, she saw her mom and dad huddled together crying. When they saw Marie, their eyes widened which signaled, "Get out! Danger!" Marie knew that her life was on the line if she went any further in the room. She listened to her parents' signal and ran back to her room. The weird thing was, she heard the footsteps and the scream, but who caused them? Was the thing that caused this invisible to Marie? She didn't know, but she stayed in her room, more terrified than ever. As all these thoughts went through her head, she saw it. The figure. It was dark and scary. Marie froze. She didn't move a muscle. The figure just stood there, too, poised for attack. The figure jumped, trying to hit Marie. It narrowly missed and crashed into the wall. She didn't know what was going on. What did this figure want? For some reason, Marie gave up. The only thing she could do was dodge the figure's attacks. She couldn't fight back. She fell on her bed in despair. This could not be happening. Not today, not tonight! The figure recovered. It jumped onto Marie's chandelier which was right above the bed. Marie stayed put. She was hopeless. The figure jumped off the chandelier, aiming for Marie. He got her. She woke up.

A Decree of War!

From The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma.
By Trenton Lee Stewart

Why I Find Green Plaid So Annoying, and What I Intend to Do About It: An Explanation of My Heroic Actions.

For one thing, plaids so hideous,  a pattern cooked up
By dimwit designers who must have been mad.
It's also perfidious(a word I looked up -
It means lots of different things, all of them bad).
Why, it's nothing but lines! Lines and more lines!
Not one single curve! Not one polka dot!
What monstrous minds could have called these designs?
They ought to be caught and tied up on the spot!

But worse, even worse, is the fact that it's green,
The color you turn when you've eaten a bug,
And of all gross and nasty things I've ever see,
Like pond scum and slime molds, or the horrible slug
All covered with fungus out in the backyard
That I saw Tuesday night right before I got sick.
No matter how hard I have tried(I've tried hard)
I've never seen green things without thinking "Ick!"

So what can I do? There isn't much for it
If I'm to get to rid of this hideous sight:
If green plaid I hate (and I do, I abhor it)
Then action is called for! A battle! A fight!
I must free the man who so long has been held
Behind prison fences (that crisscrossing plaid)!
Long covered by so much grass-green  it's a veld!
I must save this man who will soon be my dad@

(For if he's my dad, then with him I'll be seen!
So away with this plaid, and good day to this green!)
